Meloney provided articles to Everybody's Magazine around 1915. His wife had the articles bound together in this compilation which includes a very short introduction. Nearly all of the songs can be found in earlier compilations and Meloney's research is questionable at best.
Taken together, however, Meloney gives a hearty celebration of the shantyman. Although he bemoans the dying days of sail and, apparently, the American sailing empire, his celebration of the power of shanties is worth reading.
