A 160-page collection of sea shanties with lyrics, musical notation, and discussion of their history and usage. Features eight woodcut illustrations by Freda Bone, the author’s daughter. Sir David William Bone (1874-1959), a Scottish Commodore, served an apprenticeship under sail and heard chanties sung by old-time seamen, making him one of the last generation to work on square-rigged merchant ships and experience these songs in their working context. First published in Edinburgh by The Porpoise Press in 1931, with a U.S. edition by Harcourt, Brace & Co. in 1932.
