“Knurrhahn”: sammlung deutscher und englischer seemanns lieder und shanties wie sie auf deutschen segelschiffen gesun gen wurden

Translation: A collection of German and English sea shanties and songs as they were sung on German sailing ships.

A shortened reprint was published in Hamburg, 1952.

Knurrhahn is the earliest significant attempt at cataloguing shanties in the German language. Stan Hugill made significant use of the resource for his own compilations.

The word Knurrhahn also refers to the sea robin, a spiny fish that crawls the sea floor known for its “growling”.
