A collection of songs transcribed from the journals and log books of American whaling voyages, preserving the musical traditions of whalemen at sea. Originally published in 1964, later reprinted by Mystic Seaport (2005).

Songs are organized into chapters:

  • Songs of whales and whaling
  • Of the sea and ships
  • Of sailors and maidens fair
  • Of Yankee manufacture
  • All from the British isles

Huntington provides melodies for the songs but he is careful to note that the whalers he used as sources may have had entirely different tunes on their voyages.
