Alan Mills
Alan Mills (1912 or 1913–1977) was a Canadian folksinger, writer, and actor, best known for preserving and popularizing Canadian folk music. Born Albert Miller in Montréal, he worked as a crime reporter before touring with John Goss’s London Singers from 1935–37, where he was introduced to English folk music and learned to sing shanties authentically.
Mills hosted the CBC radio show Folk Songs for Young Folk from 1947–59 and recorded extensively for Smithsonian Folkways. His maritime-themed albums include Songs of the Sea (1957), We’ll Rant and We’ll Roar (1958), and Songs of the Maritimes (1959). He also composed I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly (with lyrics by Rose Bonne), later recorded by Burl Ives, Peter, Paul and Mary, and many others.
He was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 1974 for his contributions to Canadian folklore.
