Song of Chinese Rowers
Hai yo hai-yan! hai-yo, hai-yan!
Ch: Hai yo hai-yan! hai yo!
Hai-wha de, hai-yo, hai-yan!
Ch: Hai-yan! hai-yo hai yan!
This is the only lyrical song from China in Smith’s The Music of the Waters (1888), though a few airs are also provided.
Hai yan appears to be “seagull”; Hai yo is probably just yelling.
