This poem, by Rudyard Kipling (), was first published in the January 29, 1892 St. James Gazette. He was apparently paid the handsome some of fifteen guineas -- worth in 2010. From the Kipling Society's discussion of the poem,

Some sailors celebrate their safe return from a perilous voyage from Sunderland in northern England to Spain, in bad weather, in an ill-found, unseaworthy and over-insured vessel, by getting drunk and creating a disturbance. It is not clear if the owners intended them to be scuttled or overwhelmed by the storm, but they survived and brought the Bolivar safely into Bilbao.

The Kipling Society goes to great length in describing the references contained in the poem.

In 2012, Charlie Ipcar adapted the poem to the tune of "Home with the Girls in the Morning". More information can be found on Charlie's website.
