Holdstock and MacLeod
Dick Holdstock (b. 1934, Hampshire, England) and Allan MacLeod (b. 1942, Armadale, West Lothian, Scotland) were a folk duo known for their sea songs and traditional English and Scottish material. They met at the 1976 Santa Rosa Folk Festival and performed together for nearly four decades, accompanying themselves on guitar and mandolin or singing a cappella with traditional harmonies.
Neither Allan nor Dick gave up their engineering day jobs, so they often could not perform together away from home, but an evening with Holdstock and MacLeod was filled with the richness of the music of their Scottish and English roots. Probably 85% of their material was traditional songs, with sea songs forming the core of most of their gigs. Together they also ran a traditional British folk club in San Francisco called the “Castle Folk Club” with Louis Killen and Riggy Rackin as resident singers.
The duo performed at major maritime music festivals including the Mystic Seaport Sea Music Festival and the Tall Ships Festival in Dana Point. Their album Seasoned Songs captures their signature blend of English and Scottish traditional material.
