This shanty is simple in structure and the chorus is easy to join. It was recorded by A. L. Lloyd for the 1974 album Sea Shanties where he is joined by Roy Harris, Ian Manuel, Bernard Wrigley, and Martyn Wyndham-Read on the chorus. The short liner note from the compilation album Classic A. L. Lloyd is courtesy of Mainly Norfolk:
This shanty is primitive in structure, a litany-like one liner, with a chorus on a fine descending slope. Ted Howard, a pillar of the Barry Riggers, a club of oldtime sailing ship men, recorded this for us shortly before his death in 1954. It is for halyards. “Pull on the end of Juliana,” says Ted.
It's unclear if the song originated with/around Ted Howard or if it is considerably older.
