Jack the Sailor

(The Tarry Sailor)

This wishful song was printed in several compilations by 1900, mostly under the title The Tarry Sailor. An audio recording by Ralph Vaughan Williams was collected by 1908.

The protagonist of this song is turned away by the father of his amour, a common theme for sailor songs. Jack comes back with gold a-plenty which is all that it takes to win her father's consent. Our lucky sailor goes on to tell his mates how happy he is. It seems some verses may be missing from this story.

The nickname Jack Tar for a common sailor comes from the need to add tar for waterproofing ropes, cables, and clothing.
