Doerflinger was given this song by Captain Bernie Bell and considered it to be derived from "The Loss of the Albion". It follows a true story of a wrecked steamer as reported by several 1882 newspapers. The ship was lost about 100 miles from its Halifax destination, near Walkers Bay / Andrew Island / Cape Canso, Nova Scotia.
