The Stately Southerner

(The Yankee Man-of-War; The Ranger)

This shanty recounts the exploits of John Paul Jones off the Irish coast in his privateer, the Ranger, which was fitted in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in 1777. The ship, with her eighteen guns, conducted a series of punishing raids on the English coast, capturing merchantmen, burning the shipping at Whitehaven and other points, and finally taking captive the British twenty-gun Drake that had been sent to stop Captain Jones.
