Shay says it would be negligent to leave this ballad out of a book of sailors' songs "even if it could be proved that no deep-water sailor ever sang [it]". It was a favorite folk song of the Great Lake sailors, and was popular in the mountains of Kentucky and the Plains of Texas. He transcribed the following from a recording in the Archive of American Folksong of the Library of Congress. Burl Ives recorded it on the album Return of the Wayfaring Stranger.
