Colcord (Roll and Go, 1924) doesn't draw any connection to the traditional verses of John Henry, either in ballad form or as a hammer song. Most estimates place John Henry's authorship around 1900, though most of the folklore is credited to Guy Johnson's 1929 book, John Henry: Tracking Down a Negro Legend.
