There are many versions of this powerful tune. It was the number one hauling song of the Western Ocean packet rats, with most reversions being associated with Liverpool, although there does exist a Ratcliffe Highway (London) version. Doerflinger distinguishes this shanty with a forebitter that uses the same stanzas, which he calls As I Went A-Walking Down Ratcliffe Highway in Songs of the Sailor and Lumberman.

After a long voyage, the sailor would stroll Paradise Street, money in his pockets, seeking female company.

Blow, here, means "knock".
