Stan Hugill's source, an Irish sailor named Paddy Griffiths, told him this song was often sung at the pumps. The air he was provided is obviously Irish, possibly a fiddle tune.

Doerflinger adds that he has heard various melodies for this song "on both sides of the Atlantic".

  • Second greaser: Western Ocean packet-ship term for a second mate.
  • Blackball cheeser: the type of soft-crowned, peaked cap, with no stiffening in the crown, favored by windjammer men.
