Topman and the Afterguard

(The Soldier and the Sailor)

This song seems to be modeled after an earlier version called The Soldier and the Sailor which appears as a broadside in Firth c.14(226) around 1900. Some versions are a "prayer" for good times and strong beer, while other variants curse wrongdoers.

At the end of each verse, the chorus joins in on a long, low, harmonized "A-men".

A topman is an able-bodied seaman capable of climbing the riggings to handle the sails.

An afterguard is an ordinary seaman stationed at the aft of the ship, charged with menial tasks; a drudge.
